Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 173
Choice 1856 Flying Eagle Cent. PCGS graded MS-64. This looks like a Beck Hoard coin to us, and it also looks more like a Proof than a business or commercial strike. "Commercial strike"? That term has been suggested recently to replace "business strike." Okay, but no 1856 flying eagles were made for commerce, were they? They were patterns. This coin possesses far too much depth of detail (note around the eagle's eye especially) to be a business strike. The surfaces are vaguely mirrorlike, as usual for these Proofs. They are an appealing tawny brown with lots of gold shining through. The reverse is even nicer, truly Gem, and it yells out "I'm a Proof" more so than the eagle side. This piece is also in a 1st Generation PCGS case. Whatever you decide, examine it closely and enjoy--for this is a handsome and choice specimen of this hugely popular, key date.

1857 Flying Eagle Cent. MS-64. Frosty and bright, possibly cleaned as a coin of this age usually has some degree of toning. Pinkish luster and fairly well struck. Popular for the brief two-year regular issue type, and the flying eagle really makes a beautiful design element. Clean surfaces without significant handling marks.

1859 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded Proof 66. A true Gem Proof copper-nickel Indian cent with delightful, even champagne gold color and almost perfect mirrors for this metal. Right in front of the Indian's lips is a tiny patch of die-porosity (where the die wasn't fully lapped), but otherwise this is stunning without qualification. And it's quite rare so fine. (Note: mislabeled by NGC as the J-226 pattern having the oak wreath with arrows on the bow, whereas this has the normal dies as on the J-208 1858 pattern).

1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze, no "L". NGC graded Proof 64 Red and Brown. A choice proof coin that boasts ample mint-fresh surfaces and most of the original red color. The Philadelphia Mint kept tinkering with the cent in 1864, they started off making copper-nickel pieces, then changed to this bronze planchet (which was used until 1982) then in late 1864 they finally added a tiny "L" on the Indian's ribbon for the coins designer J.B. Longacre. Here is one of the middle issues, made before the "L" was added. Scarce in proof.

1871 Indian Head Cent. MS-61 Red and Brown. One of the scarce dates in this popular series due to the economic downturn which transpired beginning in 1869. The United States economy had not yet stabilized after the Civil War and mintages of most denominations were curtailed as demand for coinage fell. This 1871 cent is no exception, under 4,000,000 were struck, less than half the number of a few years prior. Few were saved, especially in such original condition, with full mint luster and original red color in abundance.

1874 Indian Head Cent. AU-58. A coin with a brief story, this particular piece has come down to us with delightful mint color and surfaces, but someone managed to put a staple scratch from the rim through the 1 in the date clear up to between the first two feathers on the Indian's headdress. Coins and staples don't mix well, the coins always loses, as evident here.

1877 Indian Head Cent. Proof 64 Red and Brown. Here it is, the Chief of the Indians, the famed 1877 in very choice Proof condition. Nearly full red on both sides, without spots or other problems. The original color is slightly mellowed by time, and the surfaces retain all the mirror reflectivity imparted by the dies. Mintages peetered out in 1877, the national economy tipped into yet another short--but sharp-- depression, demand for coins dwindled. A meager 510 proof cents were struck, few of which survive in even choice condition. Total mintage for circulation was 852,500, the lowest of the series except for the 1909-S, which was saved in great quantities. Few 1877s were saved, making this rare Proof even more desirable.

1908-S Indian Head Cent. MS-63 Red and Brown. A satiny, glowing mint state coin that will certainly please the date collector. Clean fields and devices, with the typical weak San Francisco strike. Lot 221
1909-S Indian Head Cent. MS-63 Red and Brown. This is the lowest mintage date of the Indian cent series, only 309,000 were struck before production was halted and converted over to the new Lincoln cent design by Victor D. Brenner in August of that year. The strike has the usual and customary San Francisco weakness for the issue, but the color is pleasant and even, without the wood-grain pattern that is often seen on this date. 1909 curiously brought to a close the rendition of Liberty as an Indian chief on the cent, curious in that Liberty as an Indian was all the rage in gold production starting in 1907, and moving into the Buffalo nickel series in 1913 by James E. Fraser with his composite portrait of three aged Native American chiefs, Iron Tail, Two Moons and John Big Tree. Today the Native American theme has been resurrected once again, this time on the new Sacagewea dollar coin, which replaces the dismal non-circulating failure of the Susan B. Anthony dollar. Perhaps the public will take to this new coin with unbridled excitement and the dollar bill can finally be replaced--just kidding.
